Hello Darkness

Conceived as a series of song lyrics to be stencilled around the city as positive triggers for the daily commute, it later morphed into a neon text project to be called “the city that sings”. The project takes its inspiration from Italo Calvino’s 1972 novel Invisible Cities in which a young Marco Polo describes to Kublai Khan the magical cities visited on his expeditions. It’s implied that he is creating them from imagination, or he is recounting different versions of his native Venice over and over again, or perhaps he is simply imagining some of the myriad possible forms a city might take, “the city that sings” is an imagined extension of the novel where illuminated neon signs of song lyrics are spread throughout our imaginary town, triggering it’s citizens to hum and sing as they go about their way. This particular sign was loaned to the local suicide prevention organisation for it’s annual awareness raising campaign and fundraiser. A noble cause that “completed” the work.
