No Sell Out (Red Dot)

This was an idea that floated into view whilst I was pondering a previous work that used Gold Baroque frames to denote "value". It lead me to mediate on what other signs and signifiers were employed by the art world to project this idea of importance and how the "red dot" has usurped the "plinth" as a form that denotes "worth".

It struck me just how powerful the simple "red dot" was in the commercial art sector and how it was also deployed on social media as a sort of pavlov's dog dopamine trigger response. It signifies an exchange of capital in the art world, financial capital for a generous return of social and cultural capital but also conveying ideas on the "ownership" of art. I decided to employ it on the streets on what's regarded as the lowliest form of public expression, the humble tag. A sniper's red dot shot straight to the heart of an issue we struggle with everyday in counter culture.

No sell out.
